More than a set of wheels.
Dante Giacosa's 600 Multipla debuted in January 1956 and was still in its first 633 cc form in 1957. The engine remained behind the rear axle, but the cabin stretched forward into the space where the 600 saloon carried its fuel tank and spare wheel. Foldable seats let the same short vehicle carry a family, luggage, cargo or even make two sleeping berths.
Look a little closer.
Fold the rear seats and the Multipla offered more than 1.75 square metres of load floor; another arrangement made sleeping berths nearly two metres long.

Six people in only 3.5 metres
The near-vertical nose moved the front bench over the front axle. In the six-seat layout, four individual folding seats filled two rear rows; in the 4-to-5-seat layout, a rear bench left luggage space ahead of the engine compartment. This was clever packaging, not a larger engine or longer wheelbase.

The 1957 car belongs to the first series: 633 cc, roughly 22 hp and a four-speed gearbox. The 767 cc, 29 hp 600D Multipla did not arrive until 1960, so none of its extra performance is used here. Fiat kept the versatile body idea while upgrading the powertrain later.
