A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Compagno family began with van and wagon versions in 1963. The two-door Berlina 800 followed around the turn of the 1963-64 model year, using styling based on work by Carrozzeria Vignale. Contemporary and later catalogs disagree on whether the public launch belongs to November 1963 or February 1964, so Joyride should expose that distinction rather than silently choosing one date.

Look a little closer.

Daihatsu was moving from three-wheelers and commercial vehicles into passenger cars. A body based on Vignale styling gave the Compagno a cosmopolitan identity immediately, while familiar rear-drive mechanicals kept the engineering understandable and serviceable.

A year label that needs two clocks

One source family treats the Berlina as a late-1963 car; Daihatsu's corporate chronology calls February 1964 the release. The safest encyclopedia treatment is to explain that the broader Compagno family began in 1963 while the factory's recorded Berlina 800 release came in 1964.
