Toyota 1600GT GT-5
Toyota released the 1600GT in Japan on August 22, 1967. This page follows the GT-5: an RT55 coupe derived from the Corona hardtop, powered by the 1,587 cc 9R twin-cam four-cylinder and distinguished from the GT-4 by its five-speed manual transmission.

More than a set of wheels.
The 1600GT packed specialized engineering into a familiar family-car shape. Toyota says Yamaha helped turn the Corona 1600S engine idea into the 9R, a two-valve-per-cylinder DOHC engine. The car's competition development also mattered: the RT-X prototype won the 1967 Suzuka 12-hour endurance race, and Toyota says a 1600GT-5 beat the Skyline 2000GTB at the fifth Japanese Grand Prix in 1968.
Look a little closer.
The yellow museum car looks like a tidy 1960s coupe, but the GT-5 borrowed its five-speed idea from Toyota's much rarer 2000GT. One visual warning matters: an exterior photo can identify the RT55 family, but it cannot show whether the hidden gearbox has five speeds or four.
Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.
The transmission is the trim
Toyota offered the 1600GT as the five-speed GT-5 and four-speed GT-4. Their shared RT55 body means the gearbox is the important identity boundary even though it is invisible in an exterior photograph. Joyride therefore uses Toyota's archive as the GT-5 evidence and labels the cover at year-and-family level.

The 1600GT connected several strands of Toyota engineering: a Corona-hardtop body, Yamaha-assisted 9R twin-cam development, a 2000GT-derived five-speed and lessons from the RT-X racing prototype. That combination explains why this was more than a cosmetic performance package.
