A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Toyota introduced the second-generation Corolla on May 6, 1970, enlarged it over the first generation and separated the Sprinter into its own sales-channel line. The E20 range included two- and four-door sedans, a coupe and vans. This profile uses a documented 1971 two-door 1200 Deluxe example to represent that early E20 formula: a small pushrod four, rear-wheel drive and a floor-shift manual. The year should remain a calendar/example-year label, because Toyota's surviving English archive supplies representative launch-series specifications rather than a distinct 1971 model-year change list.

Look a little closer.

The second Corolla kept a simple rear-drive layout while adding more room and a larger 1.2-litre engine.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Why simple could still be a real upgrade

The second Corolla did not abandon the first car's durable formula. Toyota concentrated on daily life: a larger body, high-back front seats, removal of old-fashioned quarter windows and a conventional strut front suspension without the predecessor's transverse leaf. It is a useful lesson in engineering progress: an ordinary car can become roomier and easier to live with while retaining familiar mechanical ideas.

How to read a mixed archive

E20 data is easy to blend because Toyota offered several bodies, engines and gearboxes. This profile fixes the subject to a Japanese-market two-door 1200 Deluxe and a documented four-speed configuration. Toyota's 750 kg KE20-D figure is retained; GAZOO's explicitly four-door 770 kg entry is not substituted. The engine-code disagreement is also left visible instead of silently choosing between Toyota's K table entry and 3K narrative.
