Citroën CX 2000 Confort

The CX turned Citroën's hydraulic comfort into a low, wind-shaped four-door saloon with a dashboard that looked like a small spaceship.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Citroën officially launched the CX on 26 August 1974 after press cars completed a 3,400 km Arctic trip back to Paris. The CX 2000 replaced the DS at the heart of the large-car range, keeping front drive, hydropneumatic suspension and high-pressure brakes while adding a transverse engine and rubber-isolated body structure. This profile stays with the original 2000 Confort.

Look a little closer.

The name CX is the French symbol for aerodynamic drag coefficient—a clue that the body shape was meant to slip through air.

A body floating above a frame

The unitary body was joined to a substructure through sixteen elastic links. That unusual separation helped isolate road, engine and gearbox vibration without giving up the precise front-wheel-drive chassis.

Fastback shape, four doors

The sloping roof did not make the launch CX a five-door hatchback. Motor Sport's October 1974 launch report describes a four-door body with a concave rear window and a separate luggage compartment beneath a rear parcel shelf. The distinction keeps this original saloon separate from the later estate body.

Numbers that must stay variant-specific

Citroën's heritage dimensions and the period Autocar engine sheet agree on the launch-family identity, but later CX engines and bodies changed considerably. The 1,985 cc, 102 bhp and four-speed facts here belong to the original CX 2000, not a later GTi or diesel.
