A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Hyundai launched the original Pony in the mid-1970s as its first independent model, with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The restyled Pony II arrived in 1982 and kept the earlier car's basic mechanical idea. This profile follows the Dutch-market 1200 L listed from September 1982, with the smaller 1,238 cc export engine—not the 1,439 cc Korean reference car in Hyundai's heritage table. Hyundai records that the Pony II later reached Canada in 1983, an important step in the company's growth beyond Korea.

Look a little closer.

The Pony II looked new, but much of its underneath engineering continued from the first Pony. A new shape does not always mean a completely new platform.

The 1200 and the archive car are not the same

Hyundai's own March 1982 Pony II five-door page documents a 1,439 cc Korean car with 92 PS in the period's Korean rating. The Dutch 1200 L listing instead documents 1,238 cc and 55 PS. Mixing those two creates a vehicle that never existed, so this profile keeps the Dutch L's engine figures and uses Hyundai's page only for Pony II family history and rear-drive architecture.

A named market car, with one field held back

The Dutch listing identifies a 1200 L five-door sold from September 1982 and supplies dimensions, weight, gearing, performance and engine measurements. It also labels the fuel system multi-point injection, a claim not corroborated by Hyundai's archive or an inspected period brochure. Rather than quietly repeat a doubtful detail, this profile leaves the fuel-metering system unknown.
