Toyota Camry 1800ZX

The 1982 Camry turned its engine sideways and used its front wheels to pull the car. That compact arrangement helped Toyota make a roomy family sedan without making the body unusually long.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Toyota released the SV10 Camry and its Vista sister on March 24, 1982. Unlike the rear-drive Celica Camry that came before it, this new Camry was a purpose-built front-wheel-drive sedan. The 1800ZX sat at the top of the original 1.8-liter grade trio and could show off a digital instrument panel that still felt futuristic in 1982.

Look a little closer.

Camry comes from the Japanese word 'kanmuri,' meaning crown—so its name belongs to Toyota's long family of crown-themed car names.

Toyota's front-drive turning point

Toyota's history describes the March 1982 Camry/Vista as its first car with a transversely mounted engine in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. That packaging decision distinguished the SV10 from the earlier Celica Camry and established the basic architecture followed by many later Camrys.

One body, three launch grades

Toyota's surviving table separates 1800LT, 1800XT and 1800ZX. All share the 1S engine, 1,832 cc displacement, 100-PS net rating and the same outer dimensions, but the ZX's representative curb mass is 1,040 kg versus 990 kg for the LT. This profile keeps the ZX model code E-SV10-JEMZS rather than treating every SV10 as identical.

A launch car before the options multiplied

The original March range combined the carbureted 1.8-liter engine with a five-speed manual. A four-speed automatic with overdrive arrived in July, a 2.0-liter EFI version in August, and later diesel and twin-cam choices followed. Selecting the March launch configuration prevents those later engines and transmissions from slipping into the 1800ZX record.
