Italy · European non-catalyst Twin Spark specification introduced at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show; later catalytic and market-specific versions are excluded

Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 Twin Spark

The 1987 Alfa Romeo 75 2.0 Twin Spark mixed two spark plugs per cylinder with a rear-mounted gearbox, giving this sharp-edged Italian saloon an unusual engineering story from nose to tail.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Alfa Romeo introduced the 75 in May 1985 and added the 2.0 Twin Spark at the 1987 Geneva Motor Show. This page covers that 148 hp non-catalyst European launch version, not the later 145 hp catalytic car. Its aluminium twin-cam engine sat lengthwise at the front, while the clutch, five-speed gearbox and differential were grouped at the rear. That transaxle layout continued an Alfa tradition and helped distribute major mechanical parts across the wheelbase.

Look a little closer.

The exact-model photograph shows a 75 Twin Spark 2.0 from the front-left. Its badges, body and wheel design support visible model identity, but the photograph date does not prove a 1987 build, hidden engine hardware or mechanical condition.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

A gearbox at the other end of the car

Instead of bolting the gearbox directly behind the front engine, Alfa Romeo grouped the clutch, five-speed gearbox and differential at the rear. The official museum specification calls out this transaxle arrangement, rear-wheel drive and inboard rear brakes. The result was a distinctive mechanical layout, not a claim that every 75 had identical trim or performance.

Twin Spark was more than a badge

The two-litre engine combined two spark plugs per cylinder with Bosch electronic fuel injection and ignition and variable valve timing. Stellantis Heritage records a 148 hp output for the non-catalyst launch version and 145 hp for the later catalytic version, so this profile keeps those specifications separate rather than blending them.
