Toyota Sera 1500 S
The Sera wrapped its doors into the roof and hinged each one in two places. They swung up and forward like butterfly wings, turning a small front-drive coupé into a rolling glasshouse.

A matching completed auction sale has not been verified for this exact year, body, trim, engine, transmission and market.
Joyride shows this gap instead of substituting an asking price, unsold bid or mismatched special vehicle.
More than a set of wheels.
Toyota developed the Sera from the AXV-II concept displayed at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show, then showed the near-production Sera in 1989 before sales began on March 8, 1990. The unusual doors used roof and A-pillar hinges, plus temperature-compensated hydraulic dampers. Underneath, the car used a Starlet platform, a transverse 1.5-liter twin-cam four and front-wheel drive. This profile stays with the launch 1500 S rather than claiming later equipment as standard.
Look a little closer.
Toyota's old brochure called the doors gull-wing, but the company's history explains that they really move up and forward like butterfly wings and need less overhead clearance than true roof-hinged gull-wing doors.

Door hinges as packaging engineering
Each door pivots near the roof's front center and again at the base of the A-pillar. That compound motion lifts the glass-rich door upward and forward without demanding as much ceiling height or side clearance as a true gull-wing door. Temperature-compensated hydraulic dampers were designed to keep the heavy doors behaving consistently.

Toyota's 1987 motor-show record lists the AXV-II as the preview model for the Sera, while the 1989 show featured a Sera among the near-production-ready ideas. That sequence makes the production car a useful lesson: show-car drama sometimes survives real hinges, weather sealing and daily-use packaging.
