A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Subaru had already changed the Impreza family completely in August 2000, calling it the New Age Impreza and naming the sedan line WRX. The STI followed in Japan on October 24. Its wider body, stronger structure, turbo flat-four, inverted struts and large Brembo brakes turned the new platform into Subaru's flagship road-performance sedan while still seating five people.

Look a little closer.

Its sixth gear was not simply bolted onto the old transmission: Subaru engineered a new six-speed with wider gear spacing inside the case and its own oil pump.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

A six-speed designed for turbo torque

Subaru increased the distance between the transmission's gear centers by 10 mm so the gear teeth could be thicker, fitted a larger clutch and added an internal oil pump. Those changes explain why the new six-speed mattered beyond its extra ratio: it was designed as a stronger system for the STI's 373 N·m turbo engine.

Standard STI and Type RA were not the same AWD recipe

The standard launch STI used a 50:50 center differential with viscous limited-slip action. Subaru reserved its adjustable DCCD system for the 16-inch-tire Type RA in this release, with a 45.5:54.5 front-to-rear starting split. Keeping that boundary visible prevents an exciting Type RA feature from being incorrectly assigned to every 2000 GDB STI.
