MINI Cooper
BMW's modern MINI kept the classic's wheels-at-the-corners attitude but added a stiff safety body, multi-link rear suspension and a 115-hp engine. It was small outside, playful to steer and built in Oxford.

More than a set of wheels.
The modern MINI Cooper went on sale in Britain on July 7, 2001, two months before Germany. Built at Oxford, it reinterpreted the classic Mini with short overhangs, a contrasting roof and front-wheel drive, but brought modern crash structure, airbags and electronic braking aids. This is the naturally aspirated 115-hp Cooper from the launch range—not the 90-hp One or the supercharged Cooper S that followed.
Look a little closer.
The UK launch car could wear a roof and mirror caps in black or white, reviving one of the easiest visual ways to spot a Cooper.

Why 'go-kart' was more than a slogan
MINI combined short overhangs, a wide track, low center of gravity and quick steering with MacPherson front struts and a multi-link rear axle. The unusual rear layout cost more than a simple beam axle but helped each wheel stay controlled over bumps and through turns, supporting the playful feel the brand promised.

BMW developed the new generation after acquiring Rover Group, while final assembly stayed in Oxford. Britain received the car first, on July 7, 2001, and the factory soon added weekend work to meet demand. The car therefore joined British styling heritage with a newly organized BMW Group production system.
