Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi AWD

Ford turned Focus-family underpinnings into a taller European crossover, then paired the launch diesel with an electronically controlled AWD system that could send torque rearward when grip demanded it.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Kuga reached European customers in 2008 from Ford's Saarlouis plant. At launch the 136 PS 2.0 TDCi was the central engine, with front-drive or AWD according to market and trim. Its tall body shared the C1 engineering family with the Focus and C-MAX rather than using a traditional off-road ladder frame.

Look a little closer.

The AWD hardware added roughly 40 kg compared with the front-drive Kuga in period European data.

A road-car AWD system, not a low-range transfer case

The Kuga's electronically controlled coupling could add rear-wheel torque when conditions called for it. That is a different idea from a traditional part-time 4x4 with low range: its job was seamless road and loose-surface traction within a Focus-derived crossover package.

Overboost needs its own label

The durable torque rating is 320 N·m; 340 N·m is the short overboost maximum. Writing only the larger number would make a temporary calibration feature look like the engine's continuous rating.

Country trims were not one European standard

The UK sold Zetec and Titanium while other markets used names such as Trend. The profile therefore fixes engine, transmission and AWD identity but avoids assigning country-specific upholstery or option equipment to every European car.
