Mitsubishi FTO GPX
A 200 PS V6, clever shifting logic, and a short, wide coupe shape made the FTO GPX one of Mitsubishi's brightest 1990s ideas.

More than a set of wheels.
Mitsubishi launched the FTO in Japan in October 1994 as a compact, dramatically curved coupe. The GPX sat at the top with a 2.0-litre MIVEC V6 and 200 PS. Its optional-style experience was unusual for the era: INVECS-II learned from driver inputs, while Sport Mode let the driver request shifts manually. The FTO won the 1994–95 Japan Car of the Year award.
Look a little closer.
The four-speed automatic offered a separate gate for up/down driver-selected shifts, a novelty in a mass-production car.

Two personalities inside one V6
MIVEC changes the valve-opening pattern rather than forcing one compromise to work everywhere. At gentler speeds the engine can use a calmer profile; as revs rise it can switch to a profile that lets the cylinders breathe more deeply. That helps explain how a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre V6 could deliver its 200 PS peak at a lofty 7,500 rpm.

INVECS-II used adaptive logic to tailor automatic shift behavior to the driver's inputs. Sport Mode added another idea: the driver could ask for upshifts or downshifts with the selector while the transmission still handled clutching. Mitsubishi made that combination a defining part of the FTO story, not merely a convenience option.
