A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Mitsubishi launched the Galant GTO in Japan in November 1970 after previewing its direction with the Galant Coupe GTX-1 at the 1969 Tokyo Motor Show. The MR was the technically ambitious A53C flagship: a 1.6-litre DOHC four, twin carburetors, five manual gears and rear-wheel drive beneath a long-nose, short-deck body. Its ducktail and dramatically curved side glass were designed as working aerodynamic ideas as well as style signatures.

Look a little closer.

The side windows were shaped to a 50-inch curve, helping the roof narrow toward the top in a shape designers call tumblehome.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

From GTX-1 to production specialty coupe

The production GTO retained the 1969 GTX-1 concept's long-nose and short-deck proportions. Mitsubishi's history treats the ducktail and curved side glass as functional aerodynamic elements as well as the visual signature of the coupe.

Why the MR mattered

The MR joined Mitsubishi's first DOHC passenger-car engine to twin-carburetor induction and a five-speed gearbox. This makes it technically distinct from the SOHC M1/M2 and from later 1.7- and 2.0-liter GTOs.
