Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach

The production 918 Weissach combined a racing-derived V8 with two electric motors, then removed about 41 kilograms through carbon, magnesium and a leaner cabin.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Porsche unveiled the 918 concept at Geneva in March 2010, approved series development that summer and completed the production car in only three years. A final-specification pair with the Weissach Package ran 6:57 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife on 4 September 2013; that production-car record must not be confused with a 2012 prototype's 7:14 lap and lower development-stage output. Assembly of the first series car began on 18 September 2013, and the run ended at 918 examples in 2015.

Look a little closer.

The Weissach car that broke seven minutes at the Nürburgring still wore road-approved production tyres developed with Michelin.

Why the 2012 and 2013 laps are different evidence

A development prototype recorded 7:14 in September 2012 with Porsche describing output only as more than 795 hp. The final 887 PS production car with the Weissach Package recorded 6:57 on 4 September 2013. The later result belongs to the sellable production specification; figures from the prototype should remain in the development story.

The Weissach package changed mass, not system power

The option retained the 887 PS hybrid system but substituted magnesium wheels, visible-carbon exterior and interior pieces, Alcantara for some leather and less sound insulation. Porsche's current history gives 1,634 kg and a 41 kg saving; a pre-launch May 2013 release used approximate 1,640 kg and about 35 kg, so the current final-production values are the better profile figures.
