A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Range Rover launched its first production three-door model on June 17, 1970. Engineers aimed to combine a Rover saloon's comfort with Land Rover off-road ability. This page stays with the original British manual-transmission version, before the four-door body, automatic gearbox and increasingly luxurious trim of later decades.

Look a little closer.

The early cabin could be washed out, yet the vehicle also used coil springs and four-wheel disc brakes—features chosen for comfort and control rather than decoration.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Long-travel coil springs

Instead of the leaf springs used by the contemporary Land Rover utility models, the Range Rover used coils at all four corners. Long suspension travel helped keep its tyres touching uneven ground while making road travel more comfortable.

Permanent four-wheel drive

A centre differential allowed front and rear axles to rotate at different average speeds on firm roads. The driver could lock it for loose surfaces, combining everyday drivability with serious traction.
