SEAT Ibiza 1.5 GLX (Mk1/021A)

SEAT's first Ibiza mixed a Giugiaro-shaped body, Karmann industrial work and a Porsche-developed engine in a distinctly Spanish small car.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The first Ibiza marked SEAT's new independence after its long Fiat-based era. SEAT led the project and worked with Giorgetto Giugiaro on the exterior, Karmann on industrialization/interior work and Porsche on the engines. The launch range offered L, GL and GLX trims with 1.2- and 1.5-litre petrol engines. At the top sat the 1.5 GLX profiled here: an 85 CV, five-speed, three-door hatchback whose specification was strong enough to underpin the near-standard Inter-Ibiza rally cup in 1985.

Look a little closer.

SEAT says the very first Ibiza built was a 1.5 GLX—the same top trim and engine combination used for this profile.

Three specialist partners, one SEAT

Giugiaro helped shape the crisp exterior, Karmann helped industrialize the project and Porsche worked on the powertrain. Yet SEAT describes the Ibiza as the first model it developed without a traditional technology partner: these firms were specialist collaborators, while SEAT owned the vehicle programme and its new identity.

A showroom hatchback went rallying

In 1985 SEAT created the Inter-Ibiza one-make championship. Every competitor used a 1.5 GLX with an almost-standard engine, so the series put the same basic 85 CV car in drivers' hands and made the competition about setup and skill rather than very different machinery.
