Tata Nano Auto Expo launch prototype

Tata's tiny show car promised to put four people behind a roof and doors for about one lakh rupees—but the famous 2008 unveiling was a promise, not yet a customer-delivered car.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Tata Motors unveiled the Nano at New Delhi's Auto Expo on January 10, 2008. It was conceived as a safer, weather-protected step up for families using two-wheelers and became known for the promised one-lakh-rupee factory price. Production plans were disrupted by the move from Singur to Gujarat; Tata commercially launched the Nano on March 23, 2009 and delivered the first customer car in July. This profile preserves that timeline by treating the 2008 exhibit as the launch prototype and using the later production figures only when plainly labeled.

Look a little closer.

The Nano used narrower tires in front than at the rear—135-section fronts and 155-section rears—matching the rear-engine weight layout rather than giving all four corners the same size.

Why 2008 and 2009 both matter

January 10, 2008 is the day the world first saw the Nano, but it is not the date retail sales began. Tata's own commercial-launch release is dated March 23, 2009, and the first customer handover followed on July 17. Calling this a 2008 launch prototype prevents the common mistake of presenting later production specifications as if thousands of 2008 model-year customer cars already existed.

Cost cutting did not mean a three-wheeler

The production car remained a steel monocoque with four doors and four seats, but Tata kept it simple and extremely light. The standard version's 600 kg curb mass, 15-liter tank and 624 cc twin illustrate how every system was scaled for city use. Its modest 105 km/h top speed and 30 percent gradeability were manufacturer claims for the 2009 production launch, not performance tests of the individual 2008 show car.
