More than a set of wheels.
A small Volkswagen team began developing a sportier Golf in secret in 1974. The concept appeared at the 1975 Frankfurt show, and the 110 PS production GTI launched in Germany in June 1976. Volkswagen first expected a special run of 5,000, but the blend of everyday space, low mass and sports-car pace turned into a lasting model family.
Look a little closer.
Its gear knob was shaped like a golf ball, and its seat fabric used the tartan pattern that became a GTI signature.

The small production plan grew enormous
Volkswagen planned only 5,000 original GTIs. The first generation ultimately reached about 462,000 built from 1976 to 1983, showing that many drivers wanted one car for errands and fun.

The front suspension sat 10 mm lower and the rear 20 mm lower than a normal Golf, while front and rear stabilisers fought body roll. Wide 175/70 HR 13 tyres and a red grille surround signaled the change without making the car impractical.
