Volvo 480 ES

Volvo's first series-built front-wheel-drive car looked like a wedge, seated four and ended in a glass hatch inspired by the 1800 ES.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo revealed the 480 before its formal Geneva debut on 6 March 1986. Developed under Project Galaxy and built by Volvo Car B.V. in Born, it introduced front-wheel drive to Volvo series production. John De Vries shaped the exterior, Peter Horbury the interior, and a Renault-derived 1.7-litre engine powered the original ES before later Turbo and 2.0-litre versions expanded the range.

Look a little closer.

Its dashboard computer could show average fuel use, average speed, remaining range and outside temperature—quite a trick in a 1986 car.

A Dutch Volvo with a Swedish brief

Project Galaxy began in 1978 as Volvo planned a new compact family. The Dutch subsidiary took charge of the 400-series development and Born production, while proposals also came from Volvo designers in Sweden. The result was recognizably Volvo without looking like the company's square sedans and estates.

Old and new in one tail

The frameless glass hatch nodded to the 1800 ES, while pop-up headlamps, a low wedge and an electronic trip computer pushed forward. That mix explains why the 480 works as both a heritage link and Volvo's technical bridge to front-wheel-drive 440 and 460 models.
