A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Volvo unveiled the 760 GLE simultaneously at several European locations on 2 February 1982. It was the first production member of the 700 family and a strategic flagship intended to carry Volvo through the decade. The Swedish launch car cost SEK 99,800 and combined the 2.8-litre B28E V6 with automatic transmission, air conditioning, a sunroof and power steering. Jan Wilsgaard's upright body maximised cabin space and made a clear break from the 240 without abandoning rear-wheel drive. This profile stops before the 1987 redesign, which brought a new nose and independent multi-link rear suspension.

Look a little closer.

Volvo priced the Swedish launch car at SEK 99,800—just under the psychologically important 100,000-kronor line.

The squared shape was a packaging decision

The 760's long wheelbase and upright glass created a spacious cabin within a conventional rear-drive layout. Volvo retained a well-located live rear axle because it saved weight and cost while keeping predictable geometry; the independent multi-link rear end arrived only with the major 1987 rework.

A flagship launched before its cheaper sibling

Volvo introduced the prestige 760 first and added the less expensive 740 later. That reversed the common pattern of building a luxury derivative after a mass-market base car, and it let the new platform establish itself with V6 comfort, generous equipment and a premium price.
