Identity
1970 Johnny Lightning 500 Special · car no. 2 · P.J. Colt chassis · turbocharged 159-cu-in Ford V8 · Indianapolis 500 winner

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum identifies this individual machine as the 1970 Indianapolis 500-winning Johnny Lightning 500 Special. Its collection record names Al Unser as driver, P.J. Colt as the chassis and Ford as the engine, specifying a turbocharged 159-cu-in (2.6-litre) V8. Joyride treats Unser as the documented driver of the exact competition car, not as its personal owner.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s official 1970 results bind the same identity to car no. 2: Johnny Lightning 500, entered by Vel’s Parnelli Jones Ford and listed as a P.J. Colt/Ford. Unser started first, completed 200 laps, led 190 and won at an average 155.749 mph. The museum separately records a 170.221-mph qualifying average, so the pole speed and race average remain distinct rather than being collapsed into one figure.

Unser’s 1970 victory was the first of his four Indianapolis 500 wins; the museum’s Hall of Fame record lists the others in 1971, 1978 and 1987. Doctorindy photographed the actual 1970 winner at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum on May 28, 2011 during the Ultimate Indianapolis 500 Winning Car Collection. The photograph records later museum presentation, neighboring race cars and surviving livery; it does not establish untouched 1970 components, private ownership, present gallery position or game-ready specification.
