Identity
Individual Swamp Rat XXX Top Fuel dragster · made 1985–1986 · Smithsonian record nmah_1276317

The Smithsonian identifies Swamp Rat XXX as the Top Fuel dragster Don Garlits designed, built and raced. Its long wheelbase, tiny front wheels, rear engine, enclosed body and downforce wing turned one individual car into a compact lesson in 1980s drag-racing engineering.

NHRA records Garlits introducing the streamlined car at the 1986 Gatornationals, breaking the 270-mph barrier in the semifinals, winning the event and eventually the championship. The Smithsonian records its championship quarter-mile speed as 272.55 mph; NHRA’s 2026 retrospective rounds that pass differently at 272.56 mph. Joyride preserves both source values instead of smoothing away the hundredth-mile-per-hour difference.

The licensed track photograph is identified as Garlits in Swamp Rat XXX at Texas Motorplex on April 5, 1987. The Smithsonian says the car later crashed at Spokane and retired with Garlits, and credits the museum gift to Don Garlits, Inc. That corporate credit does not establish Garlits’s personal legal title, so this is a builder-and-driver story—not a personal-ownership claim. The museum record, reviewed October 5, 2026, says the car is currently not on view.
