Individual pink Top Fuel dragster photographed with Shirley Muldowney at the 1986 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals · exact chassis, builder and engine not established

NHRA records Shirley Muldowney’s return to competition in early 1986, eighteen months after the June 1984 crash that nearly ended her career. Her comeback car was pink and carried sideview mirrors, details that made the machine part of the recovery story rather than just another Top Fuel silhouette.

The color was deliberate. NHRA’s history of race-car painter Bill Carter says Muldowney called Carter and designer Steve Stanford in 1986 to paint and color the comeback car. That supports a documented custom visual identity, but it does not establish who held legal title, who built the chassis or which engine package appeared at every event.

Photographer twm1340 identifies the licensed image as Shirley Muldowney at the 1986 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals at Texas Motorplex. The photograph therefore shows an actual pink Muldowney event dragster from the comeback season, not a matching-model substitute. Joyride does not claim that it is the same chassis used on her first return, one of her championship cars or the car from her later final win.
