The development mule that became Bentley’s first winner
- Connection
- Founder, engineer and manufacturer association · not ownership
- When
- Static debut in 1919 · first raced and won in May 1921 · Bentley Heritage Collection survivor
- Identity
- 1919 Bentley EXP2 3-Litre · official Heritage Collection identity BM8752 · rebuilt in the 1990s to 1921 race-winning specification
Bentley Motors identifies EXP2 as the second experimental 3 Litre and the oldest surviving Bentley. Its 1919 Olympia Motor Show appearance was still a static display because engine components had arrived late. That makes the year label useful but incomplete: the car’s competition life belongs to 1921, not to an invented 1919 race season.
The company says EXP2 began as a plain two-seater development mule, then received a dark-red sporting body and aluminium bonnet from JH Easter in March 1921. Works driver Frank Clement raced it at Brooklands on May 7 without placing. Nine days later, on May 16, 1921, he won the Whitsun Junior Sprint Handicap—the first race victory for a Bentley.
EXP2 remained a factory test and race car through 1921 and 1922 before Bentley sold it to lorry manufacturer E.R. Foden on September 7, 1923. Bentley later reacquired the car and says a complete 1990s rebuild returned it to its 1921 race-winning specification. The official Heritage Collection now lists it as BM8752. Joyride therefore records W.O.’s creator and manufacturer association, Frank Clement’s driving role, a documented later private owner and present institutional custody separately; it does not turn W.O.’s engineering leadership into a personal-ownership claim.
