Ford Ka

The first Ford Ka wrapped familiar Fiesta mechanical parts in a tiny body full of circles and sharp intersecting lines. This profile uses the 60-PS 1.3i version in the September 1996 British launch brochure, not the separate 50-PS engine tune.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Ford launched the Ka in Europe in 1996 as a three-door city car below the Fiesta. Its 'New Edge' design made curved surfaces meet crisp edges, turning a small economy car into a design statement. Underneath was a practical recipe: Fiesta-related structure, front-wheel drive and a simple 1.3-liter Endura-E engine. Ford built the European Ka in Valencia, Spain.

Look a little closer.

The Ka was only about 3.62 meters long, yet Ford described four full seats. Its wheel-at-each-corner look made the little car seem planted rather than toy-like.

One engine size, two launch outputs

European buyers could encounter both 50-PS and 60-PS versions of the 1.3-liter engine at launch. Because '1.3i' alone is ambiguous, this packet follows the September 1996 UK brochure's 60-PS Ka/Ka2 specification. It must not borrow the 50-PS version's 97 N·m output or slower factory acceleration figure.

New Edge outside, proven parts below

Ford's retrospective calls the 1996 Ka a small sensation and credits it with creating a sub-B segment for the company. The body introduced Ford's New Edge vocabulary, while the 1.3-liter Endura-E and front-drive layout were deliberately familiar. That combination let design take the risk while the mechanical package stayed simple.

Designed for crowded streets

At roughly 3.62 meters long, the Ka was shorter than a contemporary Fiesta but still offered a three-door hatch and four seats. The 60-PS 1.3i used a five-speed manual and 105 N·m. Period catalog data should be used for final curb weight and performance because equipment and national homologation could change those figures.
