Renault Laguna II 2.0 idE 140 Privilège

The 2001 Laguna II 2.0 idE Privilège mixed a roomy five-door shape with early gasoline direct injection, Renault's card-based access idea and the first five-star Euro NCAP result awarded to a car.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Renault launched the second-generation Laguna in 2001. This page follows the French-market five-door Privilège with the naturally aspirated 2.0 idE engine, manual transmission and front-wheel drive. L'Argus records the exact French configuration, while Renault's archives document the Laguna II's key card and safety milestones. The cover shows an Australian 2003 Laguna II Privilège LX: it is a strong generation, body and trim-family representative, but it does not prove the French 2001 powertrain or equipment.

Look a little closer.

The Laguna's card looked more like a hotel-room key than a traditional car key. Renault's first 2001 version still needed a button press on the card or door handle, so the later fully automatic system should not be back-applied to this launch car.

Photos show an example of the model or generation. The pictured vehicle’s year, equipment, or modifications can differ from the specification described here.

Direct injection in a family liftback

The 2.0 idE used gasoline direct injection in a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. L'Argus records 1,998 cc, 16 valves, 103 kW and 200 Nm for this exact French Privilège. Direct injection is a fuel-delivery method, not proof of real-world economy: the 7.7 L/100 km and 185 g/km figures are period combined-cycle values.

A key card and a safety milestone

Renault says the Laguna II introduced its first-generation card in 2001, with push-button locking and a dashboard slot rather than the fully automatic behavior of later cards. The same generation became the first car to receive five Euro NCAP stars, scoring 33 of the then-available 34 points. These were generation-level achievements, not a promise that every option was standard on every market trim.
