A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Fuji Heavy Industries launched the third-generation Impreza WRX STI in Japan on October 24, 2007. The first GRB replaced the prior sedan shape with a widened five-door hatchback and combined a Japanese-market 1,994 cc EJ20, six-speed manual, full-time four-wheel drive, multi-mode DCCD and multi-mode VDC. This identity does not cover export-market 2.5-litre versions or later four-door WRX STI models.

Look a little closer.

The launch car put four exhaust tips under a practical hatchback tailgate—two on each side.

Why Subaru changed to five doors

Subaru said the hatchback body helped balance reduced front lift with useful rear downforce. A longer wheelbase and wider tracks supported stability, while shorter overhangs reduced the car's resistance to rotating into a turn. The shape was therefore part packaging decision and part airflow-and-handling plan.

Three controls with different jobs

SI-Drive changes how the engine answers the accelerator. DCCD changes how the center differential manages the all-wheel-drive system. Multi-mode VDC changes the stability system's intervention. They give the driver separate choices, but Subaru still described VDC as an assist rather than a guarantee of grip.
