Mazda MX-5 2.0

Mazda's fourth MX-5 went back to lightness: a tiny two-seat roadster with its engine behind the front axle, a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. The UK 2.0 added stronger brakes, 17-inch wheels and a limited-slip differential.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Mazda revealed the fourth-generation MX-5 simultaneously in Japan, the United States and Spain in September 2014, then rolled it into global markets during 2015. For a precise launch profile, this packet chooses the UK 2.0-litre manual range announced in April 2015. It weighed more than 100 kg less than the car it replaced and retained the Jinba-ittai idea of driver and machine moving together. It does not mix in the U.S. 155-hp automatic reference vehicle, Japanese 1.5-litre Roadster or later 184-PS update.

Look a little closer.

Mazda said the ND was the most compact MX-5 generation yet even as safety and emissions rules had become much stricter than in 1989.

Exact-market choice prevents a common mix-up

The 2.0-litre ND launched with different outputs and transmissions across markets. This profile fixes the UK roadster at 160 PS, 200 N-m and a six-speed manual. A North American development display car used 155 hp and an automatic, so combining those numbers would create a specification that Mazda never sold.

Lightness changed every system at once

Removing more than 100 kg did not only improve acceleration. It let the brakes, tires and suspension manage less inertia whenever the car started, stopped or turned. Combined with compact dimensions and balanced weight distribution, that made moderate engine output feel lively without chasing supercar numbers.
