A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Jean Rédélé's A110 grew from the A108's small Berlinette shape and backbone chassis. Alpine showed the new family in 1962 using Renault 8 hardware, then added the 1,108 cc 1100 70 during 1963. The modest engine mattered because it sat in a car weighing roughly half as much as many saloons. The combination helped establish the recipe that later, more powerful A110s would carry to major rally victories.

Look a little closer.

Its roof is only about 1.12 metres high—lower than many modern car door mirrors are from the ground.

The 1962 name and the 1963 engine

A110 history is easy to compress too far. Alpine identifies 1962 as the model's appearance, while the source-backed 1,108 cc 1100 70 specification begins in mid-1963. Treating those as separate milestones keeps the launch 956 and the later 1100 honest.

Why lightness changed the arithmetic

The 1100 70's 66 PS SAE sounds small until it is paired with about 565 kg of car. The low shell, short 2.1-metre wheelbase and rear engine made the Berlinette responsive without needing a large powerplant, which was central to Alpine's competition-minded design.
