Audi 80 GL (B1)
The first Audi 80 combined a very light body, a new-generation overhead-cam engine and careful front-wheel-drive engineering; the GL added the stronger 1.5-litre tune and richer equipment.

More than a set of wheels.
Audi presented the first 80 to the media in July 1972 and put it into German dealerships that September. The B1 used a longitudinal engine ahead of the front axle and drove the front wheels, with MacPherson struts in front and a compact torsion-crank arrangement at the rear. Its EA827 engine family would spread widely through the Volkswagen Group, while the Audi 80 itself won the 1973 European Car of the Year award. The profile separates its July and September 1972 calendar launch from the model-year 1973 identity shown by Audi's reviewed archive image.
Look a little closer.
This first Audi 80 introduced an engine family that later appeared across many Volkswagen Group cars.

Lightness was part of the engineering plan
Audi quoted only 835 kg for the basic two-door 80. Low mass helped modest engines feel lively, reduced the work asked of the brakes and suspension, and saved fuel. The GL was somewhat more richly equipped, so the base figure should not be pasted onto it, but the broader lesson remains: performance can come from removing weight as well as adding power.

The EA827 engine's belt-driven overhead camshaft and adaptable basic design made it useful far beyond this Audi. Variants later powered many Volkswagen Group cars. That turns the 1972 Audi 80 into more than a successful compact saloon: it was one of the first homes for an engine architecture that shaped European mass-market motoring for decades.
