Audi A2 1.4

A mass-production aluminium body, a tall five-door cabin and an ordinary 75 PS petrol engine made the A2 1.4 Audi's most revealing small-car experiment.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Launched in 2000, the Audi A2 1.4 paired the brand's aluminium Space Frame thinking with a straightforward 1.4-litre petrol four, five-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. At only 895 kg, it used structural lightness rather than power to deliver useful performance and 5.9 L/100 km claimed combined consumption.

Look a little closer.

The complete body shell, including its doors and tailgate, weighed only about 153 kg.

Aluminium was an industrial bet, not a styling trick

The A2 transferred Audi Space Frame thinking from the flagship A8 into a mass-market-size car. The 153 kg shell and 895 kg complete-car mass were not isolated weight-saving trivia: they let a modest 75 PS engine return 5.9 L/100 km while carrying five doors and a tall cabin. The historical importance lies in Audi accepting expensive materials and new Neckarsulm tooling to chase whole-vehicle efficiency before regulatory pressure made lightweighting fashionable.

The 1.4 is the honest centre of the A2 story

The headline-grabbing 1.2 TDI '3L' proved the efficiency ceiling, but the 1.4 petrol carried the business case: 81,649 units, more than any other A2 engine. Its conventional multipoint-injected four and five-speed manual made the exotic aluminium body usable without an exotic powertrain. That contrast—ordinary mechanicals inside an extraordinary structure—is the best route into why the A2 was both approachable and costly to build.
