A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

BMW created its compact two-door 02 Series in 1966. The 2002 arrived at the beginning of 1968 with a two-litre four-cylinder engine and quickly became the most popular member of the family. This page covers the original 100 bhp 2002, not the later 2002 ti, tii or turbo.

Look a little closer.

The final digit in “2002” helped distinguish this two-door model from BMW’s four-door New Class cars.

A new kind of small sports saloon

BMW’s market research saw room for a compact but serious driver’s car. The 02 Series combined a two-door body with the mechanical ideas of the larger New Class. The 2002’s two-litre engine made that formula especially convincing.

The beginning of a long family line

The 02 Series helped define BMW’s modern image and prepared the ground for later 3 Series cars. BMW records about 330,000 examples of the standard 2002, while the wider 02 family reached roughly 825,000 by 1977.
