More than a set of wheels.
The R 1100 GS followed the R 1100 RS into BMW’s new boxer generation. Its engine was tuned with greater emphasis on torque and traction for the GS role. The early model is commonly dated 1994 in BMW histories, although the manufacturer’s detailed retrospective records a September 1993 arrival.

The fork does not do every job
Telelever combines fork-like wheel guides with a separate arm and central spring-and-damper unit. This separates wheel guidance from much of the suspension work. Its geometry reduces how far the motorcycle pitches forward under braking, a useful property on a tall machine with generous suspension movement.

BMW made the engine and gearbox structural parts of the R 1100 GS. Instead of enclosing everything in a conventional main frame, the surrounding chassis attaches to that strong central assembly. The four-valve boxer was therefore part of a broader redesign of how the adventure motorcycle was built, supported and suspended.
