A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Chevrolet introduced the Bolt EV for model year 2017 as a purpose-built, long-range battery car. Its original U.S. launch specification combined a 60 kWh pack, 150 kW motor and front-wheel drive with an EPA range rating of 238 miles. This page records that historical launch configuration; many 2017 cars later received different battery modules under GM's recall program.

Look a little closer.

The EPA classified the Bolt as a small station wagon even though many people simply call its tall five-door shape a hatchback.

Range needs a test label

The launch Bolt's 238-mile figure is an EPA rating, not a promise for every trip. Temperature, speed, heating, air conditioning, hills and battery condition can all change real driving range.

The recall changed many surviving cars

GM later expanded a battery recall covering 2017–2022 Bolt EVs because rare cell defects could raise fire risk. This article keeps the original 2017 launch specification separate from replacement-battery specifications a particular used car may have today.
