More than a set of wheels.
Chevrolet introduced the Volt for the 2011 U.S. model year. This page follows that first production version with a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery and an EPA electric range of 35 miles, not later Volts with larger batteries or longer ratings. GM called it an extended-range electric vehicle. It usually feels electric because the traction motors turn the wheels, while the gasoline engine extends the journey after the usable battery energy is depleted.
Look a little closer.
The 2011 Volt’s charging door lives on the front fender, like a tiny fuel door for electricity.

Electric range is a rated comparison
EPA rated the 2011 model for 35 miles in electric mode. Real distance changes with speed, weather, heating, air conditioning and driving style, so this page treats 35 miles as a period test result rather than a guarantee.

Early descriptions sometimes said the engine only generated electricity. The production Voltec transaxle is more flexible: clutches and a planetary gearset combine two electric machines, and at some speeds the engine can join mechanically to reduce losses. The wheels still receive the smooth, immediate character of electric drive.
