France · European launch specification introduced in 1986; phase-one AX 11 RE continued into 1989 before later trim and model changes

Citroën AX 11 RE

A feather-light French hatchback that used careful aerodynamics and a small transverse engine to make every litre of fuel work hard.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Citroën unveiled the AX at the 1986 Paris Motor Show after years of economy-focused development that included the ECO 2000 research programme. The first continental range was three-door only and included the 10 E, 10 RE, 11 RE, 11 TRE, 14 TRS and 14 TZS. The 11 RE paired the new 1,124 cc TU engine with modest middle trim and a four-speed gearbox. Its low mass, 0.31 drag coefficient and front-wheel-drive packaging made it roomy and economical without exotic hardware. Five-door cars, injection and later trim names belong to later stages of the AX story and are deliberately outside this launch profile.

Look a little closer.

Citroën's launch publicity put an AX on the Great Wall of China—a dramatic way to make a tiny economy car look revolutionary.

Economy was designed into the whole car

The AX did not depend on one magic fuel-saving device. Citroën combined a light shell, compact TU engine, front-wheel-drive packaging and a claimed drag coefficient of 0.31. That systems approach grew from the ECO 2000 research programme and explains why a 55 PS family hatchback could feel useful rather than merely underpowered.

Why the launch car is three-door and four-speed

The 1986 European range began with one three-door body. Period catalogue indexing identifies the 11 RE's 1,124 cc, 55 DIN-hp engine, while the exact 1986 catalogue specification records a four-speed manual for this trim. Later AX 11 versions can have five doors, five speeds or injection, so those features should not be silently projected backward onto the launch car.
