Citroën AX Sport

Citroën's recipe was delightfully small: a 95-horsepower twin-carburettor engine in a three-door hatchback weighing only about 720 kilograms.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The AX arrived in 1986 as Citroën's new small car, and the Sport reached showrooms in 1987 as its most competition-minded road version. Citroën paired a 1,294 cc twin-carburettor engine with the AX's very light shell, then used the model for promotional competition programmes across Europe. A factory production certificate preserved in the FIA file records 5,031 completed AX Sport three-doors from December 1986 through July 1987. This profile deliberately stops at that original batch rather than blending in later revisions or rally-prepared parts.

Look a little closer.

The FIA production certificate counts just 5 cars in December 1986, then rapidly rising monthly totals until the first batch reached 5,031 by July 1987.

Lightness made modest power exciting

Citroën quoted 95 PS, a 720 kg vehicle mass and 186 km/h maximum speed. The Sport therefore did not need a large engine or turbocharger: low mass helped acceleration, braking and changes of direction at the same time.

Road cars first, competition papers next

Citroën certified 5,031 complete, matching AX Sport three-door cars by October 1987. The FIA then homologated model 5347 in Groups A and N from January 1, 1988. The homologation form documents the road-car baseline; its later extensions and racing options must not be treated as standard 1987 equipment.
