Dacia Logan 1.4 MPI

The first Logan used proven Renault parts, a huge boot and simple shapes to give families lots of car for a deliberately low price.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The project began in the 1999 Renault–Dacia agreement as the future X90, aimed at emerging markets and a price around US$6,000. Dacia showed the finished Logan to international media on 2 June 2004 and began Romanian deliveries on 9 September. The launch sedan offered 1.4- and 1.6-liter petrol engines; this profile keeps to the smaller 75 PS 1.4 MPI and its five-speed manual.

Look a little closer.

The original brief became famous as the “5,000-euro car,” but the more useful engineering target was space and toughness: the sedan's boot held about 510 liters.

Design to a price before drawing the car

X90 reversed the usual process. Instead of designing an elaborate car and then removing costly features, teams chose proven components and simple manufacturing solutions from the beginning. That approach helped Dacia offer a roomy wheelbase and boot without turning the Logan into a tiny city car.

Why the launch date matters

The Logan was revealed to international press in June, but Romanian customer deliveries began on 9 September 2004. Later Western European sales and later diesel, estate, van and pickup bodies belong to the expansion of the X90 family, not to this first Romanian 1.4 MPI sedan.
