Ducati Monster 900

The Monster turned Ducati’s engine and trellis frame into the main visual attractions, with almost no bodywork to hide them.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Miguel Galluzzi’s Monster prototype appeared at Cologne on 2 October 1992. The 900 entered production in 1993, pairing an air-cooled two-valve engine with a chassis related to Ducati’s 851/888 superbikes. Its design concentrated on a tank, seat, handlebars, wheels and visible mechanical parts. This first 900 became the starting point for a family that soon gained more engine sizes.

Look a little closer.

The tank latch was compared by Ducati to the fastening on a ski boot.

Existing Ducati parts form a new kind of motorcycle

The Monster combined a 904 cc engine of Supersport origin with a trellis frame from the 851/888 family. The distinctive result came from how those ingredients were assembled and displayed. Taking away enclosing body panels gave the frame and engine a visual role alongside their mechanical jobs, making the structure itself part of the motorcycle’s identity.

One model grows into a family

Ducati’s chronology separates the 1992 presentation from the 1993 production start. It then records smaller 600 and 750 members and later special editions, before electronic injection reached the 900 in 2000. That sequence explains why an early Monster 900 deserves a precise identity: the family name remained, while engines, equipment and technology changed around it.
