Ford Fiesta XR2i

The XR2i turned Ford's larger new 1989 Fiesta into a bright-trimmed hot hatch. Its letter i mattered: electronic injection metered fuel for the 1.6-litre CVH engine, while a five-speed manual sent the power to the front wheels.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Ford launched the third-generation Fiesta in 1989 and added the XR2i later that year. It kept the basic front-engine, front-drive hatchback layout but added an injected 1.6, firmer sporting hardware and model-specific bumpers, skirts and wheel-arch treatment. National emissions rules produced different published outputs, so the UK 110 bhp launch figure must not be merged with the 103 PS catalyst specification.

Look a little closer.

XR2i's extra i advertised injection—an important performance and emissions technology story in a small Ford at the end of the 1980s.

One badge, two launch outputs

European XR2i figures can look contradictory without being a mistake. UK literature and histories use 110 bhp for the non-catalyst launch car, while German-market technical tables show 76 kW/103 PS for the catalyst version. Joyride should keep the market attached to the number.

Why the Mk3 was more than a facelift

The 1989 Fiesta grew in length, width and wheelbase and, for the wider range, added a five-door option. The XR2i remained a three-door performance derivative, so family-level body choices should not be mistaken for XR2i body availability.
