Kia Pride 1.3 five-speed Deluxe

Kia's first front-wheel-drive small car joined Mazda design, Ford distribution and Korean production in a compact three-door that helped make private car ownership feel attainable.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Pride arrived in South Korea in March 1987 after export production had already begun. Kia now remembers it as the country's baby-boomer 'my car': a globally shared design that Kia built at scale and exported to the United States, Japan and Europe.

Look a little closer.

Kia says more than 1.2 million Prides were produced worldwide in the car's first ten years.

Three companies, three roles

Kia's archive describes the Pride as a Mazda-Ford-Kia collaboration. Mazda supplied the small-car engineering, Kia manufactured the Korean car, and Ford sold related Festivas abroad. That shared origin explains why familiar shapes appear under several badges without making every market trim interchangeable.

Why GTX is not used as a confident launch trim

The assigned queue label says GTX, but Kia's official heritage page does not list trim names and a contemporary MBC price report calls the 1.3 five-speed car Deluxe. The article therefore preserves the assigned slug for coordination while publishing the period-attested identity.

A domestic small car with global scale

Kia frames the Pride as a turning point in both Korean private car ownership and its own exports. More than 1.2 million built in ten years makes the historical importance measurable, not just nostalgic.
