Lancia Beta HPE 1800

Lancia joined a coupe nose to the Beta saloon's longer floor, then added a tall tailgate and fold-flat split seats to make a sports car that could carry holiday gear.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Beta was Lancia's first new family after Fiat took control of the company. At the March 1975 Geneva Motor Show, Lancia added the HPE—High Performance Estate—to the saloon, coupe and Spider. Pininfarina combined the coupe's front and doors with the saloon's longer wheelbase, creating a five-seat shooting brake. The launch 1800 lasted only until the December 1975 Beta revision replaced it in Europe with a 2.0-litre version, making this exact first-series form unusually short-lived.

Look a little closer.

The rear seats and backrests split down the middle and folded into the load floor. One half could carry a long object while the other still seated a passenger; with both halves down, the compartment became long and flat. That is why HPE meant more than simply giving a coupe a hatch.

A genuinely modular grand tourer

A short first-series specification window

The HPE debuted in March 1975 with 1.6- and 1.8-litre engines, but the whole Beta family changed in December. New trim arrived and the European 1800 gave way to a 2.0-litre engine. A correct 1800 profile therefore needs the first grille, mirrors and cabin—not the much more common 2000 appearance.
