Mazda Luce 1500 Deluxe

Mazda's 1966 Luce 1500 was a roomy flagship with elegant European-influenced lines. It combined a six-person cabin with a new overhead-cam 1.5-litre engine, giving Mazda a larger, more sophisticated sedan above its small family cars.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Luce launched in Japan on August 20, 1966. Mazda developed its flowing “A line” body from an original Bertone proposal, then adapted the design for production. Mazda describes it as Japan's first domestically produced 1.5-litre sedan to pair an advanced overhead-cam engine with capacity for six people. The later higher-performance SS and the separate rotary coupe belong to other variants and years.

Look a little closer.

“Luce” is an Italian word associated with light or brightness—an appropriately polished name for Mazda's new flagship.

From Italian sketch to Hiroshima production

Mazda says the production car began with an original Bertone design and was modified by its own team. That distinction matters: the Luce's European flavor was real, but the final body was not simply a foreign drawing stamped into metal unchanged.

Why six seats and OHC mattered

The wide bench-style cabin let Mazda advertise room for six, unusual value in Japan's 1.5-litre class. The overhead-cam engine added a technical headline: it placed valve control high in the engine for more precise breathing without pretending the Luce was a sports car.
