Nissan Skyline 2000GT-R
Built for only four months, the second-generation GT-R became famous partly because it never got the racing career its badge promised.

More than a set of wheels.
Nissan launched the C110 Skyline family in September 1972 and added the KPGC110 Skyline 2000GT-R in January 1973. It carried the high-revving S20 six-cylinder engine, four-wheel disc brakes, overfenders and a rear spoiler. Stricter emissions requirements ended production in April after fewer than 200 cars, before the model entered touring-car competition. That short, road-only life earned it the nickname 'Phantom GT-R.'
Look a little closer.
The KPGC110 looked ready to race, but Nissan's works team stopped racing before it could compete as planned.

Production car, not the number 73 concept
Nissan displayed a C110 GT-R racing concept at the 1972 Tokyo Motor Show with number 73, hinting at a 1973 campaign. The production car arrived in January 1973, but this profile must use the road-car specification. The concept's livery and race hardware do not describe every customer KPGC110.

The production KPGC110 lasted from January through April 1973. Nissan attributes its fewer-than-200 total to stricter emissions standards. Unlike the C10 GT-R, it did not enter touring-car competition, so its four-wheel disc brakes, overfenders and spoiler became road-car clues to an unrealized race program.
