A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Nissan launched the BNR34 GT-R across Japan on January 8, 1999. Compared with the R33, the new car was shorter in both body and wheelbase, while stiffness increased. The V-Spec added an active limited-slip rear differential and front and carbon rear diffusers that used underbody airflow to press the car toward the road at speed.

Look a little closer.

Its dashboard screen could show seven live readings, while the V-Spec added intake and exhaust temperature for a total of nine.

The V-Spec's floor helped make grip

The front diffuser and carbon-fibre rear diffuser smoothed air beneath the car and generated downforce without simply adding a bigger wing. Nissan said the effect improved straight-line, cornering and braking stability above 80 km/h; the carbon rear diffuser was described as a world first for a production car.

Why V-Spec is more than a badge

All R34 GT-Rs received the RB26DETT, six-speed manual, Brembo brakes, 18-inch tires and electronically controlled all-wheel drive. The original V-Spec specifically added the active rear limited-slip differential and diffuser package. The carbon-hood V-Spec II did not replace it until 2000.
