Peugeot 104 ZS

Peugeot shortened the 104, kept its useful rear hatch and added a stronger 1.1-litre engine to create a tiny 780-kilogram sporting coupe.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

The Peugeot 104 began as a compact four-door in 1972. A shorter three-door body then became the Z series, and the ZS turned that practical small car into Peugeot's first little sporting hatchback. The original 1976 ZS used a 1,124 cc engine making 66 PS and weighed only about 780 kg. It became a rally and one-make-trophy starting point, long before the later 1.36-litre ZS and ZS2 versions added more power.

Look a little closer.

The original 104 saloon was roughly 3.58 metres long, but the Z coupe compressed the idea to about 3.3 metres and a 2.23-metre wheelbase. That was not merely a trim package: the shorter shell and 780 kg mass made the ZS feel more eager with a modest engine.

Shorter on purpose

The first chapter, not the loudest one

Later 104 ZS cars used 1.36-litre engines, five-speed gearboxes and up to 80 PS, while the 1979 ZS2 homologation special reached 93 PS with twin carburettors. Those cars explain the model's cult status, but the 1976 profile must stay with 1,124 cc, 66 PS and four speeds.
