A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Peugeot unveiled the 604 at Geneva in March 1975 and put the SL V6 in dealerships about six months later. Pininfarina drew a restrained, formal body for Peugeot's return to the large prestige-saloon class. Underneath, it followed a conventional front-engine, rear-drive pattern but used the new shared Peugeot-Renault-Volvo V6 and independent suspension at all four wheels.

Look a little closer.

The related Renault 30 used a similar V6 but drove its front wheels instead.

A conventional shape for an ambitious return

The 604's form was deliberately formal: long bonnet, separate boot and an upright, chrome-trimmed face. That conservatism was part of the message. Peugeot wanted executives accustomed to German saloons to see a familiar prestige object, even though the shared V6 represented a new cooperative era for French engineering.

Same engine, opposite layout

The 604 and Renault 30 launched in the same year with closely related PRV V6s. Peugeot installed the engine lengthwise and drove the rear wheels; Renault drove the front wheels and wrapped the cabin in a hatchback body. Comparing them shows how architecture, not just horsepower, defines a car's personality.
