Peugeot 205 GR 1.1

The 205 packed a small family's room into a short, crisp hatchback and helped pull Peugeot into a new era—before the famous GTI or rally car even existed.

A place in vehicle history

More than a set of wheels.

Peugeot launched the five-door 205 on February 24, 1983. Board member Jean Boillot had pushed for a small car that could handle city streets, country roads and family duty without becoming expensive. The launch range already offered several petrol engines and a diesel; this profile follows the approachable 1.1-liter GR. Its compact hatchback packaging, rear torsion bars and wide range of uses made the 205 the foundation for Peugeot's later small cars. Production ultimately reached 5,278,050 over fifteen years.

Look a little closer.

The three-door 205 and the GTI arrived only in 1984, so the original 1983 car was the sensible five-door family hatch—not yet the hot hatch many fans picture first.

A car designed to do several jobs

Jean Boillot's brief went beyond a city runabout: the 205 had to carry a small family, remain affordable and feel at home on both urban streets and country roads. That broad mission explains why the first body had five doors and why the GR 1.1 paired modest output with a useful five-speed gearbox rather than chasing performance headlines.

Torsion bars made room for the hatchback

Peugeot identifies the 205 as its first car to use rear torsion bars specifically to free passenger-compartment space. Instead of tall coil springs intruding beside the cargo area, the springing action could be packaged across the car. That engineering choice helped a 3.705-meter hatchback feel more useful inside than its footprint suggested.
