The 406 replaced the 405 with a mature front-drive formula rather than an engineering reset. In 2.0 SV form, the square-bore 16-valve engine, long 2.7-metre wheelbase and upper equipment level made it an everyday long-distance saloon rather than a homologation special.
Look a little closer.
The square-bore 2.0-litre engine drove the front wheels, while the 2.70-metre wheelbase gave the saloon its long-cabin proportions.

A mature replacement rather than a reset
